Welcome

Welcome to the Homepage of the Lecale & Downe Historical Society. Located in Downpatrick, the reputed burial place of St Patrick, the Society encourages public interest in local histories and environments and, in particular, those in the Barony of Lecale and adjacent areas in County Down, Northern Ireland. Originally two separate societies, the Downe Society (est. 1948) and the Lecale Historical Society (est. 1974), the two groups amalgamated in 2009.

The Lecale & Downe Historical Society aims to enthuse people of all ages by raising awareness of this beautiful place through time, perpetuating memory and sharing stories and artefacts that both illustrate our past and enrich our present. Lectures, outings and other activities are organised, and we promote scholarship through the publication of our annual journal, the Lecale Review.

VIDEO and PODCAST

We hope to use the website to record stories and memories of Lecale and County Down by our members and friends. A meeting to conduct a short recording lasting a couple of minutes or more can be arranged by contacting us at lecalerevieweditorial@gmail.com or you can send pre-recorded stories to this address.

Your memories can be of a significant historical event or of fairs, markets, old shops, restaurants or pubs, local characters, religious life, sport or any other aspect of life in the district.
